Frequently asked questions

Everything you might want to know before reaching out — sessions, insurance, telehealth, and what your first appointment will feel like.

Getting started

What is a free Clarity Call?

It’s a relaxed, no-cost 15-minute conversation. We talk through what you’re navigating, answer your questions, and see whether we’re the right fit — before you commit to anything. There’s no pressure and no obligation to continue.

Who do you work with?

Adults and adolescents 14 and older across Alabama. We have a special heart for veterans, first responders, and their families, but we welcome anyone seeking steady, honest support.

How do I book?

Use the contact form to request your Clarity Call, or call us directly at 256-361-9515. We typically respond within one business day and will help you find a time that works.

Insurance & fees

Do you accept insurance?

Shepherding Hope is an out-of-network provider. If you have out-of-network benefits, we can provide a monthly superbill you may submit for possible reimbursement — including for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama (BCBSAL) plans. We recommend calling your insurer to confirm your out-of-network mental-health coverage.

What if I can’t afford the standard rate?

We believe cost shouldn’t be the reason you go without care. Reduced-fee sessions are available through Open Path Collective for those who qualify. Ask about it on your Clarity Call and we’ll walk you through the options.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is an itemized receipt of the services you paid for. You submit it to your insurance company, and if you have out-of-network benefits they may reimburse a portion of the cost directly to you.

Telehealth & sessions

Is telehealth as effective as in-person therapy?

For most concerns, research shows telehealth produces outcomes comparable to in-person care. Secure video also removes the commute and makes it easier to stay consistent — which is often what matters most for progress.

What do I need for a telehealth session?

A private space, a stable internet connection, and a phone, tablet, or computer with a camera. We use a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform — you’ll receive a simple link before each session. No special software or account required.

Do you offer in-person sessions?

Our primary format is secure telehealth statewide across Alabama, with in-person availability throughout Madison County — including Huntsville, Madison, Owens Cross Roads, New Hope, and Redstone Arsenal. Ask about current in-person openings on your Clarity Call.

How long are sessions, and how often?

Standard sessions run about 50 minutes. Many clients begin weekly and adjust the cadence as they find their footing. Your plan is built around your goals and your pace — never a fixed template.

Your first session

What should I expect at my first appointment?

The first session is about getting to know you — your story, what brought you here, and what you hope for. There’s no pressure to relive everything at once. We move body-first, making sure you feel safe before we go anywhere difficult.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. Your sessions are private and protected under HIPAA. The only exceptions are the legal and ethical limits every counselor shares — situations involving imminent danger to yourself or others, or the abuse of a child or vulnerable adult.

Do you integrate faith into therapy?

Only if you want us to. An optional Christian and scripture-informed lens is available and offered gently. It’s never imposed, and it’s entirely your choice — the work is just as welcoming without it.

Still have a question?

The easiest way to get an answer is the free Clarity Call. Ask us anything — no pressure.
